<p>En juillet 1978, l’Action Jeune Théâtre (AJT) profite du Festival d’Avignon pour proposer une journée d’action en faveur du « jeune théâtre », c’est-à-dire le théâtre indépendant et populaire qui s’est développé, singulièrement dans l’espace occitan, dans le sillage de mai 1968. <br />L’AJT avait été créée un an plus tôt mais trouve son origine dans la convergence des réflexions, revendications et créations de plusieurs compagnies du Languedoc et de la Provence (Teatre de la Carrièra, Nouvelle Compagnie d’Avignon - Théâtre des Carmes, Centre Dramatique Occitan de Toulon, Théâtre de La Rampe de Montpellier, etc.) <br />En juillet 1973, André Benedetto et le Théâtre des Carmes avaient créé les conditions de cette convergence avec les Rescontres occitans organisés en plein Festival d’Avignon.</p>
<p>Dès sa création en 1977, L’AJT Languedoc-Roussillon-Provence-Alpes regroupe 37 compagnies et organise le 17 novembre 1977 une « Grande marche du Théâtre Régional » à Montpellier autour des deux mots d’ordre, l’un social - « Vivre et travailler au pays » - et l’autre théâtral - « Les théâtres en Occitanie vivront ».</p>
