Les variations dans la couleur de l'encre et dans l'écriture  laissent supposer que les poésies ont été rédigées sur plusieurs années (de 1899 à 1907 selon les dates attribuées aux poèmes).  Sur une feuille volante est collé une coupure du journal Art et Soleil de 1904.
