Il joue un rôle central dans la renaissance occitane du XIXe siècle. Il compte parmi les Primadiés, c'est-à-dire les sept jeunes poètes qui fondèrent le Félibrige le 21 mai 1854, au château de Font-Ségugne, près d'Avignon, aux côtés de Frédéric Mistral, qui en sera le premier Capoulié. Le Félibrige adopte alors la graphie mise au point par Joseph Roumanille, et qui passa la postérité sous le nom de <a href="https://www.univ-montp3.fr/uoh/occitan/une_langue/co/module_L_occitan_une%20langue_11.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">graphie mistralienne</a>.
