Il joue un rôle central dans la renaissance culturelle occitane du XIXe siècle. Il compte parmi les Primadiés, c'est-à-dire les sept poètes qui fondèrent le Félibrige le 21 mai 1854, au château de Font-Ségugne, près d'Avignon, aux côtés de Frédéric Mistral, qui en sera le premier Capoulié.
