Il compte parmi les Primadiés, c'est-à-dire les sept jeunes poètes qui fondèrent le Félibrige le 21 mai 1854, au château de Font-Ségugne, près d'Avignon, aux côtés de Frédéric Mistral, qui en sera le premier Capoulié.
